Inter-Lutheran Records 1944-1971 ; 1955-1970.

This series comprises records retained by the Rev. Fredrick A. Schiotz, president of The American Lutheran Church (TALC) from 1960-1971. Records date from 1944-1971 with the bulk dating from 1955-1970. These records represent his involvement in the inter-Lutheran cooperative agencies Lutheran Council in the USA (LCUSA) and its predecessor, the National Lutheran Council (NLC) as well as correspondence with other Lutheran church bodies and Lutheran organizations. Record types represented in this series include handwritten and typewritten business correspondence, news releases, news articles, minutes, agenda and exhibits, topical papers, reports, memoranda, circular letters, and news clippings. Subject matter of these records include work areas of LCUSA and NLC, campus ministry, social welfare concerns, racism in the church, Lutheran-Catholic relations, Lutheran-Orthodox relations, Native American ministry, rural church issues, refugees, service to military personnel, the Lutheran church in Canada, liturgy and church music, the Lutheran Bible Institute, youth ministry, and relief work. NLC and LCUSA included TALC in their membership and as the president of a member body, Pastor Schiotz served on their executive committees. Included in these records are records of Pastor Schiotz's predecessor at the Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELC), the Rev. J.A. Aasgaard. There is some correspondence that was generated by Schiotz in his pre-TALC tenure when he served as executive secretary of the NLC's Division of Lutheran World Federation Affairs' Commission on Younger Churches and Orphaned Missions (CYCOM), as well as from his service on the executive committees of CYCOM and the NLC's Department of World Mission Cooperation during his tenure as ELC president. In addition to a majority of the correspondence authored by Schiotz, this series also includes a sizable quantity of correspondence written by the Rev. J.A. Aasgaard, president of the ELC prior to Schiotz; C. Thomas Spitz, Jr., general secretary of LCUSA, and Paul C. Empie, executive director of the NLC. For additional information on the work areas of LCUSA and NLC, please refer to the archival collections of corporate records held by the ELCA Archives for these two cooperative bodies.
